Our Neighborhood

The Mill sits on Westminster Street in Providence's West End, a corridor that's been in the middle of a long, real transformation. New residents. New businesses. RIDOT's reconstruction of the Route 6/10 interchange includes a new bridge crossing for Westminster Street, connecting the West End more directly to downtown and removing the divide that's been here for decades. New housing units are being developed around the property. Protected bike infrastructure is being added through the Safe Streets for All plan. The neighborhood is walkable, accessible by bus, and getting easier to get to.

The Building's History

With a foundation dating back nearly 130 years, 1155 Westminster Street holds a rich place in Providence’s history as a center of making, craftsmanship, and industry. Built in the late 19th century, the complex grew alongside the city’s West Side, surrounded by lumber yards, marble works, and other working industries. The property was home to L. Vaughn & Company, a Providence-based manufacturer of sash, doors, builders’ finish, and detailed millwork that operated in the city for more than 120 years. Over generations, skilled hands worked within these walls to produce the materials and goods that helped build Providence itself.

As the neighborhood and industries around it evolved, so did 1155 Westminster. The complex eventually housed a variety of manufacturing operations, including jewelry production, while its historic brick structures continued to serve as working spaces. After L. Vaughn & Company relocated to Warwick in 1967, the building entered a new chapter, later becoming home to studios, small businesses, and community gathering spaces. Today, the mill remains a reminder of Providence’s industrial past while continuing its long tradition as a place where people make, create, work, and gather.
